Following up on earlier Met Light Walks about the history of light in the European Renaissance, this talk extends the discussion to the 19th-century revolutions in painting and how they continue to inform lighting design today. This 90-minute discussion through the Met’s 19th-Century painting collection will draw connections between developments in painting that were, in part, reactions to the invention of the camera. Impressionism, chief among these movements, can be read as a further development in the exploration of light as the principal subject of painting and image making. Recommended, though not required, that you have taken the first walk-through of the Renaissance Galleries with Studio School of Design. We are also offering a walk-through of the Renaissance Galleries earlier in the day.
