Light Walk: Exploring the History of Light at the Met Museum

Guided walk-through of the Met’s European Art collection, 1300-1800, exploring the origins of light as a symbolic tool in Western Painting.

Friday afternoon, July 10, 2026, from 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm. We will meet inside the Metropolitan Museum of Art starting at 1:45pm so we can enter as a group. To the right of the center desk as you enter, by the back wall of the main hall.

Have you ever thought about why we practice lighting in Western culture the way that we do? How did lighting design become a shared language that we can use to tell stories to an audience?
This walkthrough will make you think more deeply about light, and you will gain an appreciation of our history in the long development of artistic thought and ideas.
This event is limited to 15 participants.
If you are not already a member, the Met Museum entry fee is pay what you want for New York City Residents. In addition, SSD will have a limited number of passes on hand for anyone from out of town on a first come/first served basis.
