High School Educator’s Professional Development Summit in Lighting

This IN-PERSON Full day event provides interested Secondary School Educators with tools for educating your students about the art and technology of lighting design. We will be talking about career paths for lighting designers, and specific actionable lesson planning for increasing your student’s capacities in lighting and preparing them for work on your own school productions and a path into college and a career. All of the activities have been prepared with NJ and NY state educational standards and coding, and participants will be given lesson plans that they can use in their own classrooms.

No prior technical or lighting experience is necessary to participate in this fun & impactful professional development workshop. This program is targeted to all teachers who may be interacting with their students in theatrical productions or theater courses.

Typical Workshop Schedule:

9:00am – 9:30am: Introductions and Meet and Greet

9:30am-11:30am Project 1: Angles of Light: “Problem Based Learning” lessons in light with easily available resources for classroom experiential learning.

11:30 – 12:30: Lunch and Discussion: The experience of teaching the theater in your district, lighting’s connections to STEM programs.

12:30 – 2:30 Project 2: Creating Stage Pictures: Looking at Art as an inspiration for stage lighting.

2:30pm – 2:45pm Break

2:45pm – 4pm Hands-on session with the rig and console

4pm – 5pm Wrap up review and discussion to introduce the available careers involving entertainment lighting.
