Josephine Marquez

Born in Puerto Rico, Ms. Márquez has been a professional lighting designer for Ballet, Opera, and Theatre since age 19. She came to the United States to pursue her Masters in Fine Arts in Theatre Design and Technology from Florida State University. She is a long-time resident of New York, lighting soap operas for ABC Network and then working as a Theatre Consultant and Owner’s Representative for the last 34 years. Current projects include David Geffen Hall, New York City and Glassell Auditorium at Museum of Fine Arts Houston, TX. Recent projects include Alice Tully Hall and Juilliard School Renovation at Lincoln Center, Gaillard Performance Hall in Charleston, SC, Tobin Center for the Arts in San Antonio, TX, the Black Box Theatre at Drexel University in Philadelphia, Le Poisson Rouge (multi-media art cabaret) in New York City, The North Fork Theatre in Mattituck, NY, The Times Square Edition hotel Paradise Club in New York City, and Faena Development performing spaces in Miami Beach, FL. Ms. Márquez worked as the Owner’s Representative and Theatre Consultant for the renovation of three Theatres at Centro de Bellas Artes Luis A. Ferré in Puerto Rico, Owner’s Representative for Stern Auditorium Audio System Project at Carnegie Hall, and Owner’s Representative and Theatre Consultant for the home of Jazz at Lincoln Center, at the AOL Time Warner building in New York City. During her consulting career at Fisher Dachs Associates, Ms. Márquez was the Principal Designer/Project Manager for the renovations of Avery Fisher Hall, The Juilliard School, The New Victory Theatre, the
Ford Center for the Performing Arts in NYC (renamed Lyric Theatre), and the Chicago Orchestra Hall. She was part of the design team for major new multi-purpose halls such as Bass Performance Hall, New
Jersey Performing Arts Center, Broward Performing Arts Center, and Times Union Performing Arts Center. She was the Principal Designer/ Project Manager for many international projects including Centro Nacional de las Artes and Auditorio Nacional in Mexico City, Maui Community Arts and Cultural Center, Singapore Convention and Exhibition Center, Suwon Park Outdoor Amphitheatre in Korea, and
Teatro Angela Peralta in Mazatlán. Ms. Márquez was part of the design team that won the Gold Medal at
the 1991 Prague Quadrennial Theatre Design Exhibit and Competition. She was also named to the Outstanding Young Women of America. She has given seminars in Mexico City, Japan, and at the Seville
Opera in Spain. She belongs to the National Association of Broadcast Engineers & Technicians, the Society of Television Lighting Directors, and the International Alliance of Theatrical Employees. She was the second woman to belong to the American Society of Theatre Consultants. J Márquez Consultants is certified as a Minority & Woman-owned Business Enterprise (M/WBE).
